Liverpool have been set a deadline of Saturday to conclude a deal for Luis Suarez, by the player’s Dutch club, Ajax.
Kenny Dalglish and Damien Comolli have earmarked Suarez, the Uruguayan who scored three times at the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, as the perfect partner for Fernando Torres, but there is much work to do if they are to sign the former Groningen forward in the current transfer window.
24-year-old Suarez, who scored a staggering 49 goals in 48 games for Ajax last season, is keen on proving himself in the Premier League, and Liverpool have already seen a bid of £12m for the player rejected, as Ajax are holding out for a figure nearer £21m.
And Comolli, the man in charge of player recruitment at Anfield, will have to move quickly, as Ajax coach Frank De Boer is keen to have the issue resolved as soon as possible.
“We don’t want to lose him,” said De Boer.
“Liverpool know what they have to pay and we are sticking to our guns. We want to know by January 29 – after that nothing more will happen.”
