Birmingham City win League Cup

Birmingham City have won the League Cup, beating Arsenal 2-1 at Wembley.

Birmingham celebrate Martins winner

Alex McLeish won the tactical battle with Arsene Wenger, as Blues 4-5-1 formation stifled the Gunners creativity, whilst his sides never say die attitude, gave the Gunners more than a few problems to deal with.

Nicola Zigic, the £6m striker headed Blues ahead after half an hour after Seb Larsson’s corner had been headed on by Roger Johnson.

However, Arsenal skipper Robin van Persie had Arsenal level before half-time, turning home a tremendous volley, under intense pressure from Martin Jiranek, from an Andrey Arshavin cross.

In the second period both sides went close, Keith Fahey hitting the post for Blues, and Samir Nasri and Nicklas Bendtner both forcing Ben Foster, the man of the match, into good saves.

But in the dying embers of the match, a long kick from Foster was glanced on by Zigic, and neither Koscielny or Wojciech Szczesny dealt with the ball, and Obafemi Martins gave Birmingham the victory.
