Manchester United and Chelsea will renew acquaintances in the last eight of the UEFA Champions League after being paired together in this morning’s draw.
The duo, who met in the 2008 final in Moscow, where United emerged victorious on penalties, will meet in the first leg at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday April 6, with the return at Old Trafford coming six days later.
Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham side will have their work cut out for them in the quarter-final’s as they come up against the nine-time winners, Real Madrid, managed, of course, by Jose Mourinho.
Spurs, who knocked out AC Milan in the last round, will travel to the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday April 5 to take on Cristiano Ronaldo and company, as the Madridistas gear up for their first quarter-final appearance in seven years.
The quarter-final will be a repeat of the 1984/85 UEFA Cup quarter-final, when Real Madrid emerged victorious over two leg, and went on to win the trophy. The Spanish side, who knocked out Lyon in the last round, have also always won the European Cup whenever they have knocked out a French side. History is certainly on their side.
Tournament favourites Barcelona will meet Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk at the Camp Nou in the first leg of their quarter-final.
If Pep Guardiola’s side can navigate their way past Mircea Lucescu’s eclectic mix of Brazilian flair and Eastern European steel, then a semi-final meeting with Spurs or Real Madrid will be on the cards.
Finally, Leonardo will take his Internazionale side back to Germany, after their heroic win over Bayern Munich in the last round, to take on Schalke 04, a club in turmoil after sacking manager Felix Magath this week.
Former Hoffenheim coach Ralf Rangnick has been appointed manager at Schalke, and they will travel to the San Siro for the first leg against Samuel Eto’o and his side, in a repeat of the 1997 UEFA Cup final, when the German side emerged victorious.
