New Chelsea star David Luiz has fired out a warning to Premier League leaders Manchester United, that the reigning champions are out to defeat them not only in the Champions League, where the two have been paired in the quarter-finals, but also in the race for Premier League glory.
Luiz scored Chelsea’s opener in the 2-0 win over Manchester City yesterday, which has taken the side to within nine points of United, with a game in hand and a trip to Old Trafford still to come.
And the Brazilian defender, who joined in the January transfer window from Portugese side Benfica for a fee in the region of £21m, reckons the Blues are playing the kind of football that can retain the Premier League title.
“We want to do everything this season” Luiz told the London Evening Standard.
“We want to catch United in the Premier League and beat them in the Champions League. We have to believe – we can win the title.
“There are still many games and a lot of points to play for. I can’t play in the Champions League because I am cup-tied but I am very close to the team. The happiness of my team-mates will be my happiness if they do well.
“I am really delighted that the fans have taken to me so soon but the best thing is that the team are in a good way. I always work hard and like to help the team. Of course, when the team are doing well it is much easier. It has become easy for me to settle in because the players and the manager have helped me.”
