Chelsea sack Ancelotti as Blackpool and Birmingham tumble

English football’s worst kept secret – well apart from ‘that one’ – was thrown into the open today as Carlo Ancelotti was ruthlessly sacked by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich just hours after the Blues final Premier League game of the season, the 1-0 defeat at Everton.

Ancelotti was allowed to undertake his post-match press duties following the defeat. However, the chief executive, Ron Gourlay, was waiting for him at the foot of the stairs outside the media suite and duly informed him that he was to be relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

Elsewhere, on what had been dubbed ‘Survival Sunday’, defeats for Blackpool and Birmingham City, coupled with a win for Wigan Athletic at Stoke, meant that both sides will play in the NPower Championship next season.
